Valencia

Valencia is a very popular city near Javea that is worth visiting when in the area. Famous for its rich history, architecture and festivals, Valencia has had a recent boost in economy due to an increase in tourism and construction. Real estate is hot in Valencia, much like Javea and other coastal towns nearby. The attraction only seems to grow with each year, as more tourists and expatriates make their way to the Costa Blanca.

Valencia is an ancient seaside town that has changed hands many times since Roman rule began in 137 B.C. Since then, Valencia has been home to the Visigoths, the Moors and the Aragonese, to name a few. Evidence of Valencia’s versatile history can be seen all over the city in its amazing architecture. Most notable is the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados, a giant cathedral that has had many collaborators and architects add to its structure. Most famous of all features may be the impressive dome, built in the fifteenth century.

In addition to cathedrals and other buildings, the town of Valencia features many monuments and squares, which serve as perfect backdrops for candid photographs by tourists. The Plaza de la Virgen is a large fountain that is a staple for any tour through Valencia, as is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the largest of all squares in the town. Those hungry for even more culture can find it in one of Valencia’s many museums. Whether one is interested in art or science, there are a few museums for it all.

When visiting the city in March, tourists will be treated to the largest of Valencia’s yearly festivals: Las Fallas, which celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on the 19th. Extravagant costumes and puppets take to the streets on this day for a grand festival and much fun is had by all. Another event one should look forward to in Valencia is the America’s Cup, which will be held for the first time in Europe in 2007. The city has undergone many new constructions in preparation for the international boating event.

Valencia holds many surprises for tourists. It is an ancient town that enjoys modern day luxuries, so visitors shouldn’t have to worry about “roughing it” during their stay. One could spend a week in Valencia just enjoying the architecture, but one shouldn’t miss out on the beaches or the nightlife. While in the city, one should also enjoy a fresh orange, which is a fruit that is grown in abundance throughout the area. Whatever a tourist is looking for, one can definitely find it in Valencia, Spain.
